GERAINT WATKINS  ‘Moustique’

‘Warm, witty and heartfelt, dispensing alternately rueful and wry nuggets of wisdom from the badlands of middle age.’ – Graeme Thompson, The Word.

‘A suave refinement of deep-seated influences… matching a spare sophisticated style with a connoisseur’s touch. Astringent, observational songs seal the deal.’ – Gavin Martin, Uncut.

Geraint Watkins, the acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician, releases his fourth solo studio album ‘Moustique’ in early 2014.

His previous album ‘In A Bad Mood’ received a very warm reception and Geraint was rewarded with six live BBC radio sessions and a spot on the ‘Later… with Jools Holland’ TV show.

Jools was quoted in Mojo:  ‘One of the great underrated songwriters. He mashes up elements of Cajun, country, blues, soul and British pop and it’s about love, death and grown-up issues, sounding like it is sung by someone who has lived a life.’   Bob Dylan is another of the many who have praised him, with a number of plays on his ‘Theme Time Radio Hour’.

Geraint was born in South Wales in the 1950’s.  After an art-school education he moved to London.  Early records with a couple of bands gained him attention, then on his solo albums he excelled – ‘Watkins Bold As Love’ in 1997 (Bluefive), ‘Dial ‘W’ For Watkins’ in 2004 (Proper) and ‘In A Bad Mood’ in 2008 (Goldtop).

His talents have attracted much admiration from other musicians including the top names in popular music.  Consequently he’s much in demand as a hired hand and has played and recorded with Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler, Nick Lowe and many more.  He fronted three of the Rolling Stones and others in Willie & the Poor Boys, and regularly tours as a key member of both Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and Nick Lowe’s band.

In 2012 Nick Lowe chose him to open on his band tour across Europe and Australia.  Geraint followed that with headline dates in Spain, Sweden, Norway and the UK.

For his solo work, Geraint has attracted some of the best players around.  On the album and his recent London shows he is accompanied by a seven-piece band: Kate St. John (cor anglais), Matt Holland (trumpet), Martin Winning (saxophone), Matt Radford (double bass), Johnny Scott (guitar) and Robert Trehern (drums).

Tracks:House on the Prairie, Walking To Milwaukee, Blues and Trouble, No Longer Required, Crock of Gold, Mosquito, Keep On, All Around the World, Good Boy, Shaky Tree, Shine a Light, Angels Live in Heaven.

‘Moustique’ was recorded at Goldtop Studio, Tooting.  Cat. No: AU79CD/LP011 Goldtop Recordings ~ a label imprint from Jungle of Goldtop Studio recordings.
