Mercury Rev’s 1991 debut album ‘Yerself is Steam’ was a critical success, launching the band into live gigs and their 34-year career.  Shortly afterwards, the 'Car Wash Hair' single was issued on 12".  These releases led to their third gig being on the main stage at Reading Festival, their fourth was supporting Bob Dylan.  Despite the critical success resulting in strong sales, it was their fourth album, Deserter Song that gained a mainstream audience.
